Yellows and Oranges - Natural Dye Workshop - Thursday, October 24th 6pm - 9pm

$110.00

In this 3 hour in-person class, I will offer my extensive knowledge on natural dyeing and will also offer demonstrations on various dyeing techniques. We will prepare fabric through the fabric preparation process of scouring, tanning, and mordanting. We will also discuss modifying pigments to get various shades. This course prepare you so you can practice the craft on your own, so you can apply a variety of colors to your fiber-based artwork, home goods, or garments.

We will begin class with me providing a brief presentation, where I introduce dye history and techniques and will also discuss various ways in sourcing materials and how you can create a more sustainable practice with it. This talk will also include a few contemporary artists working with the material, as a source of inspiration. I will then demonstrate the process, the yarn preparation process including preparation for shibori, ikat/resist dye, dip dye, bundle dye and how you can achieve interesting patterns in your textiles.. Lastly, I will discuss the rinsing and then care and keeping of your material.

In this session, we will be working with wool, cotton, linen and silk.

For this in-person class, all materials will be provided. Students will dye a set of 4 napkins, a tote bag, alone with a set of samples to add to their swatch book. Students can also bring additional items such as garments and accessories for dyeing. (Please note, these must be made of 100% natural fibers).

We will be dyeing with 3 to 4 dye materials: in dye vat form, and additional plant matter for our botanical/ecoprint experimensts. We will be dyeing with pomegranate, marigold, osage, among other dyes.

This class pairs well with the “reds and pinks” and “indigo and resist” dye workshops, as you will gain a comprehensive understanding of color when enrolling in these other course offerings.

This is an in-depth class for beginners, but all skills levels are welcome.

Lunch will not be provided, though refreshments and a snack will be served.

This class will take place in my Bushwick, Brooklyn, Studio.
