Jessie initially embarked on a project of creating daily artworks, which she calls “woven drawings” or “thread sketches.” This collection is a direct response to a particular time and place experienced during her time in Oaxaca. The artist’s work is deeply rooted in moments being marked by color.
Jessie is deeply inspired by the bodies of work Anni Albers and Sheila Hicks made during their own personal journeys in their art practice in Mexico- she attempts to apply a similar visual language through this early development of a series of abstracted landscapes . The works collectivity reveal the artist’s influence in modernist painting and textile art. Furthermore, the small scale of these woven works offer a sense of intimacy through its reference to portraiture.
