Introduction to Indigo and Resist Dye Workshop

$100.00

Achieve brilliant blue hues and explore the magic of indigo!

In this 3-hour session, your instructor, Jessie Mordine Young, will begin with a brief presentation on indigo and its fascinating, complex history. The class will cover the cultivation process, showing how indigo transforms from a bright green leafy plant to a hardened blue cake and finally into a magical dye vat. This presentation will also feature contemporary artists using indigo for inspiration.

We will create a fructose indigo vat together, equipping you with the knowledge to replicate and maintain it at home for extended use. I will demonstrate various resist-dye techniques, such as stitching, folding, and binding, to create unique patterns on fabric. We will explore achieving different shades of blue through dipping and oxidation, and you will apply these techniques to produce a range of beautiful patterns on your fabrics.

The goal of this workshop is to provide you with the experience and knowledge to incorporate indigo dyeing into your own practice. For the in-person session, all materials will be included, and students will dye a set of four napkins, though you are welcome to bring additional pre-washed fabric to use in the vat. An email with instructions will be sent a week before the class.

This is an introductory class for beginners, but all skill levels are welcome.

This class will take place in my art studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
